Sunday 13th August - Windsurf ***** The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny periods
and warm.
Foil – 18.34 knot max, 17.13 knot ave, 11.29 knot hour, 16.99 knot mile,
34.28 km., 11.29 knot alpha.
Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Tushingham Bolt
5.5.
After two hectic windsurfing session we got to have a bit of a lay-in
before doing my exercises mainly in the back garden although we did get
some brief spells of light rain! I then checked the Felixstowe coastwatch
webcam and noticed loads of dinghies heading out of the River Deben to
race, I later learned it is the Firefly National Championships which are on
for a week, the wind from the SSW was up to around 17 knots so I decided to
head down to The Dip to get a close look at the dinghy racing about a mile
and a half off Bawdsey beach, the sun had come out too, really warming up:)
I arrived at The Dip at 1 with enough beach to launch and wind to 20 knots
although it did look pretty lumpy but I quickly set up the foil board and
for the first time rigged my new Tushingham Bolt 5.5 which proved
absolutely perfect for almost the entire session with the wind only easing
down at the end! I got off the beach OK despite the waves and headed
downwind for two miles to see the racing dinghies, there must have been at
least 50/60 boats lining up for the start of a race in somewhat challenging
conditions, the sea really was big, I sailed around the boats keeping out
of the way, gybed near Bawdsey and headed back with the dinghies now
racing. Most had made the windward mark by the time I got there, I then
passed through them on the reach, fantastic to sea and followed them to the
second mark before heading upwind then 7 beats in a big sea got me to the
pier with the 5.5 being brilliant. I gybed by the pier and then had the
most amazing two run back to the red and white bouy closely following the
beach for a good part of it:) Gybing I beat to Jacobs Ladder to do it again
but with the wind easing down I headed back to end a top session. There was
now a couple of kitesurfers out along with Robert foiling and Steve Biggs
on the fin but sadly the wind was too light now:(
